My one-of-a-kind books generally incorporate materials or techniques not readily adaptable to editions. At any given time, various books in this group may be in exhibitions, and some are already in private collections. I would like to share the photos and descriptions with you because these books offer special glimpses of my themes and bookmaking techniques. Each book description contains specific notes, but please check with me if you would like additional information about any of these one-of-a-kind books.
October 2-December 18, 2010: This book will be in The Bascom's "American Craft Today" National Juried Exhibition (Carol Sauvion, judge), in Highlands, NC. From March 1-May 3, 2009, this book was in the North Carolina Artists Exhibition, Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Raleigh, NC.
Remnants Gathered is a tribute to family members whose hand-sewn quilts I treasure—especially my maternal grandmother, mother-in-law, and paternal great-grandmother. My grandmother’s quilts teem with reminders of the many childhood clothes my mother sewed, after we’d shopped together for the patterns and fabrics. In this book my celebration of family legacies mingles with a broader celebration of quilts and quilters. The pamphlets include an original poem, brief prose, and a “found poem” from an anonymous quilter’s reflections, as shared in a quilting book that had belonged to my grandmother. That book was also the source for the traditional quilt patterns presented on one side of this fully opened book. Closed, Remnants Gathered is an accordion with a pamphlet-stitched book on each end. Opened, it is a rectangle with prints on both sides—on one side, linocuts of traditional quilt patterns and, on the other, linocuts of my own crazy quilt designs. (4 5/8” x 4 5/8” x 1 ¼”—closed fully; 13 ¾” x 18 ½” x 1/8”—opened fully flat, with artwork on both sides)
