My one-of-a-kind books generally incorporate materials or techniques not readily adaptable to editions. At any given time, various books in this group may be in exhibitions, and some are already in private collections. I would like to share the photos and descriptions with you because these books offer special glimpses of my themes and bookmaking techniques. Each book description contains specific notes, but please check with me if you would like additional information about any of these one-of-a-kind books.
Something Done by Quiet Being
This book was part of the Slow Book Salon's Design Gallery (Burnsville, NC) exhibition, August 28-September 26, 2009.
This hard-cover, fan-style book incorporates Tibetan printed lokta, rice, and Canford papers and glassine envelopes, as well as a metal book ring, Irish linen thread, and glass beads. Designs within the glassine envelopes were created with sumi-e ink, and the text (in English and Morse code) was created with inkjet printing. Red abstract shapes move freely within the envelopes.
The title and text are from Lao-tzu’s Tao Te Ching, as translated by R. B. Blakney. Within the glassine envelopes, text appears in both Morse code and English, with each page containing a single word. The reader is invited to fan through the pages from front to back and then turn the book over and continue reading. Enclosed but freely expanding, the excerpt’s wisdom unfolds.
