Great Good/Bad Fortune
My experiences at Mammoth Cave National Park (as described in the Books & Tales part of the website) made me appreciate bats in entirely new ways, and I have continued to learn more about bats and their endangerment by white-nose syndrome. During recent research, I learned about the stark contrast between Eastern traditions' positive, receptive views of bats and Western traditions' negative, fearful ones. In Great Good/Bad Fortune, a flag-structure book, I explore these contrasts through words, colors, and forms. Bat images appear on the flags, which move freely, and various parts of the book contain text describing cultural views and particular word associations, both positive and negative. Great Good/Bad Fortune is available for purchase through Vamp & Tramp Booksellers. You can glimpse the book as part of a video about the 44th California International Antiquarian Booksellers Fair, where Vamp & Tramp (a.k.a. Vicky and Bill Stewart) shared a variety of books.
