How Bat Entered English
Since my Mammoth Cave National Park residency (as described in the Books & Tales part of this website), I've been gathering information about bats and learning especially about the threats they now face because of white-nose syndrome. I've come to appreciate in new ways the amazing traits of these mammals, and I've explored the ways that our cultural views of them have taken shape. In How Bat Entered English--a large, flutter-form, hardcover book--I examine the etymology of the word bat, which encompasses such terms as flutter-mouse. (I enjoying losing myself in dictionaries for such treks and thereby finding fascinating tales!) This book is available for purchase through Vamp & Tramp Booksellers.
